I thoroughly enjoyed my time wandering through all the art at the Tate Modern this morning. I particularly enjoyed the light installation by Anthony McCall. It felt like I slipped seamlessly in and out of different galaxies.

We had a fabulous road trip through the Czech Republic! We stopped at so many castles and beautiful towns, but one of my favourite places was Soos Nature Reserve, known as the “Czech Yellowstone”. There were just over a kilometre of boardwalks through a variety of terrain including forest, marsh, and muddy, bubbling areas that were venting gas and mineral water. There was a lot of signage explaining what we were seeing, it was a really interesting stop.

People travel from all over the world to drink the healing mineral waters of Karlovy Vary and other spa towns in the Western Czech Republic. Even if you aren’t here for the water, the towns are beautiful and are nestled in nature.

Near our apartment there is a powerful sculpture honouring the “Carquejeiras” (Gorse women) of Porto. The sculpture is near the top of one of the steepest streets in Porto, one of the routes these women carried loads of 40 - 50kg of gorse (a shrub that was burned in ovens and fireplaces) several times a day. In their day, they were not acknowledged for the hard and important work they carried out, day after day.

We had to wait a few hours to be able to check into our accommodation, so we wandered around looking at interesting buildings. This was one of them, a palace-turned-library. It has a beautiful spiral staircase case leading up to the reading room dreams are made of.

This morning we joined @firstsceneco for a photowalk around Porto. One of the stops was the Cemitério do Prado do Repouso, and the theme was “contrast”. I thought the fresh flowers were a nice contrast to the aged sculpture.

It was inspiring to get out with other photographers and see the locations and themes through their images. 📷

This evening we joined a group to check out the festas de honra de nossa Senhora de Saúde 2024 at a park about an hour’s walk from our place. On the walk home, I took a peek over the fence behind the Igreja da Lapa, and spied this serene cemetery.
